Consistency, Visuals, and Practice are the foundation to classroom management. I once heard the phrase, “hold the mand,” meaning when a student is given a direction, it should come to happen. Whole brain teaching combined with visual prompts support young students who are learning about the school environment. I observe my students to learn what might be upsetting or difficult for them. This allows me to detour or distract and help the student focus on being successful.
As workshop leaders and Edutopia articles stress, it is important for a teacher to be proactive. Besides a meaningful, safe and interactive classroom arrangement, I must establish consistent routines, train the expected behaviors, and follow through when directions are (or are not) finished. Maintaining respect between myself and my students is part of classroom management too.
